IBRAHIM TAKES OVER FROM FAYEMI AS CDD’S DIRECTOR
The
International Governing Council of the Centre for Democracy &
Development (CDD) is happy to announce the appointment of Dr
Jibrin (Jibo) Ibrahim as the institution’s new Director with
effect from February 1, 2006. Dr Ibrahim takes over from our
Pioneer Director, Dr Kayode Fayemi, who, after nine years of
dedicated service is retiring to participate fully in political
activities, as a prospective governorship candidate in Ekiti
State, Nigeria.
Since its inception in 1997, and Kayode’s
focused leadership, CDD has mobilised global opinion on
questions of democratic development and generated continuing
dialogues on alternative routes to democratic governance in the
West African sub-region in particular and at a Pan African level
in general. The Centre has emerged as a leading intellectual
resource for policy-oriented scholarship on democratisation,
human security and development in Africa and a much quoted
reference point for informed analysis and capacity building in
West Africa.
We are sad to see Kayode leave just as the
organisation is consolidating its gains and beginning to take
firm roots as a sustainable institution. We are justifiably
proud of his distinguished personal contributions to making the
CDD what it is today. Exiting while there is still much glory
ahead is a worthy sacrifice in a region and continent where
leaders find it difficult to leave office.
Dr Ibrahim comes into the position with
excellent antecedents as an outstanding scholar-activist with an
international reputation. He received degrees in Political
Science from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria and a
doctorate in Politics from the University of Bordeaux in France.
An Associate Professor in Political Science at the Ahmadu Bello
University and Senior Fellow at the Institute of Federalism in
Friborg, Switzerland among several other academic
accomplishments, Dr Ibrahim has lectured, published and
consulted extensively on democratisation and governance in
Africa. A well-regarded leader in civil society, Dr Ibrahim has
been the Director of Global Rights = an international human
rights NGO, in Nigeria. He has also served in the leadership of
several national and international advocacy and research
networks for constitutional and electoral reform and
strengthening of civil society. In appointing Dr Ibrahim, our
Governing Council believes that he would be able to build on the
solid reputation and results accomplished over the years under
Dr Fayemi’s leadership.
From the smallest beginnings, CDD has grown
to reach across the region and build partnership and policy
engagement up to the higher echelons of national governments,
sub-regional multilateral institutions and a broad spectrum of
Civil Society. This has been made possible by our engagement
with critical sectors of communities and constituencies, through
vibrant networks and practical outputs. We are most delighted
that Dr Ibrahim has been part of some of these networks and
therefore will not be starting in CDD from the scratch in his
new task of ensuring that the CDD remains the catalyst
intellectual resource centre in the region.
We trust that all our associates, partners,
funders, supporters and all members of the public will continue
to extend to our new Director and staff the same solidarity and
critical dialogue that have been the basis of our engagement
over the years.
Signed
Dr Tajudeen Abdul-Raheem, Chair,
CDD’s Governing Council.
