Our investment in people remains a unique selling point of CDD, and one that will be enhanced by the establishment of the training and resource facility that is part of this endowment appeal.  It constitutes the best mechanism to institutionalise the variety of capacity building initiatives that we currently run.  Housing the various initiatives under one roof offers us the opportunity to fill the gaps that have been identified by beneficiaries and partners whilst guaranteeing the sustainability of the training courses and capacity building programmes.

Through our Leadership and Empowerment project, we have trained some of the brightest future policy leaders in the sub-region, especially women and youth, over the last five years. The programme emphasises personal empowerment, organisational development and transfer of skills, and the faculty consists of some of the leading expert trainers in the continent, based on our partnership with the African Women’s Leadership Institute. Graduates of this two-week, intensive programme, now number over 400, and many have gone on to hold important positions in government, the non-governmental sector, academia and the professions.

Based on the success of this programme and the feedback from beneficiaries, now runs several other exchange programmes and fellowships. The public policy leadership fellowship is a short-term fellowship ranging from one to three months and it provides opportunities for civil society leaders and activities to reflect on their work and experience.

Equally, the Democracy & Diversity exchange programme focuses specifically on sharing knowledge and experience between West Africa and South Asia, and is run in partnership with the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in New Delhi, India. The Graduate Fellowship programme for Women Lawyers facilitates training on human rights, governance, development and gender and is run in partnership with Kituo cha Katiba, the East African Centre for Constitutional Development. Beneficiaries of the programme undertake formal postgraduate training at a UK university and many have gone on to occupy important positions in government and civil society in their countries of origin.
